Registration at the Municipality "Ufficio Anagrafe" (Only for EU Students)

What is the registration at the Municipality "Ufficio Anagrafe"?

If you are an EU citizen, as of April 11, 2007, you are allowed to move without restrictions in Italy without applying for a Stay Permit. During the first 3 months of your stay, you have no requirements to meet if you have a valid identity document. After 90 days of uninterrupted stay in Italy, you must register with the Municipality Registry Office of the city where you have your housing (Comune di Lucca - "Ufficio Anagrafe").

Who can I contact in order to register at the Municipality "Ufficio Angagrafe"?

You can contact the Campus Management and Front Office of the School (facilities@imtlucca.it) for an appointment, that is in charge of the procedure to fulfill this legal obligation.

Which documents does the Campus Management and Front Office need in order to help me with the registration?
  • Valid passport or ID;
  • Tax Identification Number (Codice Fiscale);
  • IMT Attendance Certificate - released by the PhD and Higher Education Office (phd@imtlucca.it). (This document declares that you are an IMT student, states that you are a scholarship recipient and that you have the accommodation provided by the School);
  • Health Insurance valid for a solar year (EHIC Card is ok, but you can also subscribe to a private health insurance or to the NHS).
What is the difference between "Domicilio" and "Residenza"?

"Domicilio" is the place where the person has established his/her principal place of business and interests.
"Residenza" is identified as the place of fixed living, with all the fiscal implications.
e.g: You have the "Residenza" in the country where you have registered your residence from time and when you start your PhD Program living in the IMT Campus, you will have the "Domicilio" in Lucca (Piazza San Francesco, 19 or Brunero Paoli, 31).
