Stay Permit Application (Only for NON EU Students)

What is a Stay Permit?
The Stay Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) is a document that all non-EU students will need to apply for in order to stay and study in Italy legally.
When do I have to apply for my Stay Permit?
The request for the Stay Permit must be done within 8 working days from your arrival in Italy. The Stay Permit will be issued by the local Police Headquarters - Immigration Office (Questura - Ufficio Immigrazione).
Who can help me with the application of my Italian Stay Permit?

You can get in touch with the Campus Management and Front Office of the IMT School (facilities@imtlucca.it) that will book for you an appointment with the Immigration Office of the Police Headquarters and guide you with the application of your Stay permit.

Which documents do I need for the Italian Stay Permit request?
  • Form 1 (Modello 1) given by the Campus Management and Front Office, to fill with your general information and your Visa Information;
  • 4 colour passport-size photos on white background;
  • The Invitation letter sent to you by the School;- A copy of all pages of your passport (except the blank pages);
  • Copy of the health insurance policy (when you arrive in Italy for the first time we recommend you to apply for a health insurance that covers you for at least throughout the current year);
  • Receipt of the postal bulletin (bollettino postale) of € 70,46 (cost of your Stay Permit card) that you will have to pay at any post offices;- Duty stamp (marca da bollo) of € 16,00;

    On that day, you will complete the process for the issuing of your Italian Stay Permit and you will be fingerprinted too.
Where is the Immigration Office?

The local Police Headquarters - Immigration Office (Questura - Ufficio Immigrazione) is in:Via Montanara, 3055100 Lucca (Link to the map: https://goo.gl/maps/SQFKDgA9uCgA3BZ18)

When I will be able to collect my Stay Permit?
You will be able to collect your Stay Permit usually in one or two months. The Immigration Office will send you an SMS on your mobile telephone once ready.
If a Police Officer stops me in the street before I have got my Italian Stay Permit, what can I show to prove that I am legally staying in Italy?
You can show him/her the receipts given to you by the Post Office since they substitute temporarily the Stay Permit.
Can I send somebody else to collect my Stay Permit?
No, you cannot. It is a personal document that the Immigration Office can only hand in to you.
For how long my Stay Permit is going to be valid?
Your first Stay Permit will last one year (the same duration of your Study Visa). It will be possible to apply for a 2 years Stay Permit only at your first renewal.

Renewal of the Stay Permit (Only for NON EU Students)

When do I have to renew my Stay Permit?

It is your responsibility to check the expiry date of your Stay Permit, and to contact the Campus
Management and Front Office of IMT School (facilities@imtlucca.it) starting from 60 days before the expiry date (not before!). You can get in touch with the Campus Management and Front Office of the School that will book for you an appointment with the Immigration Office of the Police Headquarters and guide you with the application of your Stay Permit.

Can I renew my Stay Permit after the expiration date?
Yes, you can renew it within 60 days after the expiration date. 
Which documents are required to complete the renewal of Stay Permit?
  • Form 1 (Modello 1) given by the Campus Management and Front Office, to fill with your general information
  • A copy of the Stay Permit to be renewed, front and back;- A copy of all pages of your ppassport (except the blank pages);
  • A copy of the attendance certificate issued by the PhD Higher and Education Office (phd@imtlucca.it)
  • Copy of the health insurance or payment receipt;
  • Receipt of the postal bulletin (bollettino postale) of € 80,46 that you will have to pay at any post offices;
  • Duty stamp (marca da bollo) of € 16,00.
  • On that day, you will complete the process for the renewal of your Italian Stay Permit and you will be fingerprinted too.
