Consciousness; sleep-wake cycle; brain; psychology
The research will be conducted using a combination of electrophysiological methodologies, recently acquired by the IMT School and of neuroimaging techniques, including structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging. The candidate should have a good knowledge of the different methodological approaches for data acquisition and analysis, as well as an adequate level of scientific maturity to carry out an independent research activity. In light of the integrated multidisciplinary activities implemented by the IMT School, the candidate should give impetus to the definition of a joint psychophysical laboratory between different disciplines, and should foster the opening towards research themes related to the biological and social characterization of human behavior (e.g., in the financial and economic fields) and towards innovative computational methods for the analysis of psychophysiological and behavioral data acquired through electrophysiological techniques (e.g., study of patterns of brain connectivity and study of networks). Tutorship and mentoring of the PhD students; participation in the development of the School's research activities.
In line with current development plans for the Ph.D. course in Cognitive, Computation and Social Neuroscience and with the multidisciplinary research context of IMT School, the candidate for the position of Type B Researcher (RTDB) should have proven experience in the study of brain plasticity in humans, in relation to sensory experience and interaction with the environment. Expertise is required in the in vivo investigation of markers of brain plasticity in physiological conditions and, in particular, in relation to the sleep-wake cycle and to the role of sleep in attention, learning and memory. The definition of these markers and brain processes will advance our knowledge on altered states of consciousness and on pathological modifications of the sleep-wake cycle. The researcher will be required to explore the impact of these alterations on social behavior and decision-making processes, even from the perspective of affective and social neurosciences.
